Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is the national policy, lobbying and marketing organization representing Canada's 11,000 dairy farms. DFC strives to create favourable conditions for the Canadian dairy industry, today and in the future. It works to maintain policies that foster the viability of Canadian dairy farmers and promote dairy products and their health benefits.
The organization is run for dairy farmers, by dairy farmers. They fund its operation, including marketing and promotion activities. Among other programs, Dairy Farmers of Canada invests up to $1.7 million per year in health nutrition, and dairy production research in Canada. It administers three research programs on a cost-sharing basis to invest in dairy cattle production development.
The Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) was created on May 29, 1995 as the result of a federal government decision to privatize all genetic evaluation activities in Canada. CDN has four mandates including:
CDN's mission is: "To provide excellence and leadership in dairy herd improvement through an efficient information infrastructure and quality genetic evaluation services ensuring Canada's continued responsiveness and competitiveness both domestically and internationally. This mission reflects the main mandates of the company with the focus being Canadian dairy producers and the industry that supports them in terms of genetic improvement."
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) provides information, research and technology, and policies and programs to achieve an environmentally sustainable agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector, a competitive agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector that proactively manages risk, and an innovative agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector. AAFC, along with its portfolio partners, reports to Parliament and Canadians through the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
